UP IN THE MORNING EARLY

The winter of 2017/18 has been one of the harshest in Scotland for many years. Now, at the start of March, we thought that the worst was past but then the wind blew from Siberia bringing very heavy snowfall. We are unused to really heavy snow and Scotland has pretty much ground to a halt. I thought these verses would be appropriate.

Robert Burns collected the traditional chorus and added two stanzas of his own.

“Cauld blaws the wind frae east to west, the drift is driving sairly

Sae loud and shrill’s I hear the blast – I’m sure it’s winter fairly

“Up in the morning’s no for me, up in the morning early!

When a’ the hills are cover’d wi snaw, I’m sure it’s winter fairly!

“The birds sit chittering in the thorn, a’ day they fair but sparely:

And lang’s the night frae e’en to morn, I’m sure it’s winter fairly!

“Up in the morning’s no for me, up in the morning early!

When a’ the hills are cover’d wi snaw, I’m sure it’s winter fairly!”
