INSCRIPTION ON A GOBLET
Robert Burns inscribed these words on a glass belonging to his friend John Syme. However, Syme was less than pleased that his precious crystall was ‘ruined’ in this way and he threw the glass away in annoyance. The glass was later recovered and kept by a servant.
“There's death in the cup--sae beware!
Nay, more--there is danger in touching;
But wha can avoid the fell snare?
The man and his wine's sae bewitching!”
