EPITAPH ON THE AUTHOR

This mock epitaph was written by Robert Burns during the time he lived at Mossgiel Farm. John Rankine was a farmer in the Tarbolton area who was the subject of several pieces by the poet.

“He who of Rankine sang, lies stiff and deid,

And a green, grassy hillock hides his heid:

Alas! Alas! A devilish change indeed.”
